Blast from the Past #143: Weird meeting doodle // And Peter's geeky trick question { What is on the back ?? } (( 1989 )) [[ Couresty of PL ]]

"I stumbled upon this oddity yesterday while out in the old studio looking (unsuccessfully) for something else. It's a wacky doodle I made during some meeting at Mirage -- I'm not sure if it was a TMNT- or Funatix!-related meeting. The brief notes I scrawled in the upper left are obscure in meaning, although I think the reference to "louvered blinds vs. roll-ups" refers to the shades we chose for Mirage years ago. (Although I suppose it could refer to shades for the Funatix! office space we briefly rented in Florence, MA... who knows?)

One kind of interesting thing about this drawing is that I did it on the back of a piece of scrap paper which had an image printed on the reverse side. You can partially see that image through the paper. Anyone recognize what it is? -- Peter Laird

♥ ♥

-->> .. WHAT COULD IT BE ?!

.. to get a clue, we take the illustration and turn it about a quarter clockwise.

We need to then ' REVERSE ' the sideways illustration. We need to flip it. As if we were holding Peter's little Toad guy on the skull there in a mirror.

..

We do this since the illustration on the back was the original document. It was used as a scrap piece of paper for Pete's doodle. We have no way of seeing the flip side of this drawing. The little that is bleeding out from the other side is kind of tricky to read.

Logic dictates that if flip the skull illustration, the bleed thru' would read even more giving us a better clue as to what this item is on the back.

Hi-lighting the bleed - thru' image we see some sort of Vector - like structure.

.. it would appear to me as a computer rendering of some sort, a building.

A major clue to what we're looking for, but again there is a ' TRICK ' to Pete's Riddle !!

The Answer ::

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles v.1 #20 ..pg.9 - ' 3-d ' schematic of Hudson Block.. The False front for "FOOT CLAN's HEADQUARTERS"

..the drawing on the back of Pete's Skull doodle, is a computer / vector layout of the " False Front " or mask as it were to the interior of the Shredder's headquarters. The 3-d schematic for the Hudson Block. This disguised the Foot's headquarters. Making it look like a normal, old piece of New York City infrastructure.

" .. I created that graphic using some program (can't remember which) on my old Atari ST computer." -- Pete Laird

In actuality it was the Foot Stronghold, gutted and rebuilt with a massive communications and Tunnel network. Also hidden within' were the incredible Foot Clan weapon and industrial stockade. An armory. Also home to the Foot Geneticists' monstrous creations, all taking the visage of the Shredder. Only at the end of the tale will Leo learn the shocking truth of Oroku Saki's return.

☺ ☻

..the 'TRICK' in Peter's question is that you'd actually have had to have seen and read the iconic and classic TMNT Volume 1.

The imperative story arc was "Return to New York".

Leading up to legendary; final confrontation between Leonardo and the Shredder.. Donatello,the Turtles, & their delusional Triceraton ally Zog infiltrate a Foot Communications center. Hacking into the Foots' computer database ::

Don discovers this rendering of the Hudson Block and the actual ' INTERNAL ' structure of the Foot's building.

This will help Zog and the Turtles launch a strategy, a diversion,and a raid on the Foot.

♥ ♥

This would become one of the most crucial attacks against their enemy with ripple effects for both sides felt for years to come.

And for poor Zog the Triceraton .. a great, tragic fate awaits.
